Cohiba

Cuban Cohiba cigars

The Cohiba brand cigars made in Cuba are the top product of the state-owned cigar manufacturer Habanos SA . According to Min Ron Nee, Fidel Castro received a cigar in 1963 from his bodyguard Bienvenido "Chicho" Pérez, which his friend, the cigar roller Eduardo Rivera, had made for his own use. Castro recognized the quality and had these cigars made by Rivera.

founding

From 1964 the Cohiba was used as a gift for heads of state and diplomats. For this purpose, a cigar factory run by Rivera was founded that same year. The later Cohiba did not yet have a name or its own cigar ring, but was equipped with cigar rings personalized to the recipient. It wasn't until 1966 that the name Cohiba came up in the course of a conversation with Rivera's assistant. The following year, production was relocated to the factory later known as El Laguito .

Since 1982, the cigars have also been available on the free market, with the exception of the USA, because of the Cuba embargo. A second line, the Linea 1492, was added in 1992 to mark the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America .

Manufacturing

The cigars are produced in the El Laguito factory , whose prerogative is said to be the first tobacco manufacturer to choose from among the tobacco leaves of the annual harvest. Unlike most other cigars, the tobacco leaves for the Cohiba Linea Classico are fermented three times instead of twice (including the Linea 1492) . In 2003 the Siglo VI was introduced in the new Cañonazo format .

All Cohiba formats are “totalmente a mano” - made entirely by hand, only the pressing of the cigar takes place in the so-called press stick. The torcedor must have appropriate experience in order to be able to estimate the optimal strength for the finished cigar.

Cohiba from the General Cigar Company

The US company General Cigar Co. Inc. , based in Richmond (Virginia) , a subsidiary of Match AB since 2005, has been selling cigars on the US market since the early 1980s under the brand name Cohiba, registered for the USA by General Cigar in 1981 the Dominican Republic . The Cuban company Cubatabaco has been suing the use of the cigar name since 1997. According to a court ruling by the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board of the US Patent and Trademark Office , the cigars can still be sold under the Cohiba name in the US because Cubatabaco cannot sell the original brand there due to the US trade embargo .

Fakes

Fake Cohibas are sold en masse on the streets of Cuba. It is safest to buy in state tobacco shops. The packaging format can also provide an indication of counterfeit products. Cohibas in boxes with glass lids are always fakes.

Origin of name

The name Cohiba was taken from the language of the Taíno Indians and describes a wrap made of tobacco leaves that was smoked by the natives of Cuba. The roots of the cigar are reflected in the Cohiba logo. It shows the head of the Taino Indian Hatuey .
