Cokin is a French company based in Rungis , Val-de-Marne , specializing in the manufacture of optical filter systems for photography , video and film . The company became famous for its Creative Filter System , which was invented by the French photographer Jean Coquin and brought to market in 1978. The name Cokin commonly stands for this filter system. After bankruptcy in 2010, Cokin was taken over by the Japanese manufacturer Kenko-Tokina in 2011 .

In contrast to conventional filters, which are either screwed into the filter thread of the lens in front of the front lens or attached there, Jean Coquin developed a system that is based on a universal holder and uses standard filter sizes. The filter holder is screwed into the lens using an adapter ring . This system has the advantage that one filter can be used for different lens diameters. Only one adapter ring is necessary for the existing lens diameter.

Cokin filters are usually made of CR 39 , a plastic that is also used in the manufacture of spectacle lenses and contact lenses . A range of neutral gray filters called "Nuances" introduced in 2015 is made of glass.

The filter system includes almost all in photography for use next filters such as polarizing filters , UV filters , color correction filters, graduated filters , neutral density filters , effect filters, etc., and matching modular sun visors. The system includes around 200 filter variants in rectangular or round designs.

The Cokin filter system is produced in four sizes, which cover the needs of the simple viewfinder camera to the professional large format camera and film camera .

  • A series: for filter thread diameters from 36 mm to 62 mm, filter size 67 × 67 mm
  • P series: for filter thread diameters from 48 mm to 82 mm, filter size 84 × 84 mm
  • Z-PRO series: for medium format cameras and film cameras, filter size 100 × 100 (150) mm
  • X-PRO series: for medium and large format cameras and film cameras, filter size 170 × 130 mm

In 2013, as part of a revised branding, the name of the filter series was changed to S, M, X and XL.

Round filters with directional characteristics such as polarization or star filters can be rotated in the holder as required. Even rectangular filters with directional characteristics, such as graduated filters, can be rotated to the required position in the holder on the adapter ring.

Up to three filters can be combined in one holder and several holders can be placed on top of each other. Only loss of light and possible vignetting set limits here.

The holder system was further developed with the proliferation of first analog, then digital viewfinder and video cameras. These cameras have very different lens diameters, which are often without a thread. For this purpose, Cokin offers a holder system that can be attached to the tripod thread of the camera and is therefore independent of the lens design. Another variant can be attached using a magnetic adapter ring. This adapter ring is glued to the camera or lens.
