Colchane is a town and a district in the province of Tamarugal in the Tarapacá region in the north of the South American Andean state of Chile .
The border town of Colchane is located at an altitude of 3718 m at the transition from the Bolivian Altiplano to the Chilean Cordillera Occidental on the left, northern bank of the Río Isluga , which flows 25 km downstream into the Salar de Coipasa salt lake . East of Colchane on the Bolivian side is the village of Pisiga Bolívar , and on the Chilean side on the other side of the river is the village of Pisiga Carpa .
The Colchane district includes the towns of Isluga , Enquelga, Cariquima and Chijo.
Colchane is the Chilean district with the highest poverty rate in the republic, 34.56 percent of the population live below the poverty line (Encuesta Casen, 2006).
