Coldstream is a small town in the northern Okanagan Valley in British Columbia , Canada . The district municipality ( English district muncipality ) is 7 kilometers southeast of Vernon . The parish is part of the Regional District of North Okanagan and, although not the largest parish in the district, is the seat of the district administration. To the southwest of the community is Kalamalka Lake and Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park .

history

Originally the country was settled by the First Nation . Both the Okanagan and the Secwepemc lived and live in the area . This is why there are historical references to these here and in the surrounding area.

The settlement from a farm called Coldstream Ranch by its owner . After the founder of the farm, Charles Frederick Houghton, it later belonged to John Hamilton-Gordon, 1st Marquess of Aberdeen and Temair , one of the Governors General of Canada .

Demographics

The 2016 census showed a population of 10,648 for Coldstream, after the 2011 census had shown a population of 10,314 for the municipality. The population increased by 3.2% compared to the last census in 2011 and is thus slightly lower than the provincial average, with a population increase of 5.6%.

At the 2016 census, the average age of the residents was 43.6 years, while in the province it was 42.3 years. The median age of the residents was determined to be 47.7 years. The median age of all residents in the province was just 43.0 years in 2016. The population here is significantly older than in the rest of the province.

education

Coldstream is part of School District # 22 - Vernon in Vernon. There are various schools in the small town, two elementary schools and one secondary school .

politics

The granting of local self-government for the municipality took place on December 21, 1906 ( incorporated as District Municipality ) under the name The Corporation of the District of Coldstream .

economy

From its history, agriculture and forestry were originally the most important industries in Coldstream. Today, most of the residents work in the health and care sector (15.2% of employees), trade (12.3%) and the manufacturing industry (11.7%).

traffic

In an east-west direction, Highway 6 passes through the urban area of ​​Coldstream. A Canadian Pacific Railway also passes the community in an east-west direction.

The city does not have its own airport, but can only be reached via the airports of the surrounding communities.
