The Kalamalka Lake (also called "Kal Lake") is a large lake in the Interior Plateau of southern central British Columbia in Canada . It is east of Okanagan Lake and about 4 km south of Vernon . The lake is named after a chief of the Okanagan (in the USA: Okanogan ) who occupied the north shore.

At different times of the year - even from different points at the same time - the color of the lake can vary between cyan and indigo ; this earned the lake the nickname “lake of a thousand colors”. The color of the lake is caused by the scattering of light, which is caused by the precipitation of calcite (CaCO 3 ).

Hydrology

Kalamalka Lake is a glacial edge lake . The main tributary comes from Wood Lake , which lies south of Kalamalka Lake and is connected by a canal at Oyama, a district of Lake Country . The outlet of the lake is Vernon Creek, which exits at the north end of the lake, crosses the town of Vernon and flows into Okanagan Lake. The average retention time of the water in the lake is 55.2 years.

There are several great beaches to be found at Kalamalka Lake. Kal beach and Cosens Bay Beach , which are in the heart of Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park , are two of the popular beaches on the shores of the lake. Some other beaches are Jade Bay Beach, Juniper Bay Beach, Kekuli Bay Beach, Kirkland Park Beach and the south end, Kaloya Regional Park Beach.

Two provincial parks extend on Kalamalka Lake, Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park and Protected Area (4,209 ha) and Kekuli Bay Provincial Park (57 ha).

There are many resorts on the lake, including Tween Lakes Resort and Klub Kal. There is little pressure on fish populations at Kalamalka Lake as the lake is mainly used for boating and water skiing. The Tween Lakes Resort currently has the only marina on the lake with a gas station.
