The Mahoney Lake is a meromiktischer salt lake near the Okanagan Falls in British Columbia ( Canada ). It was created in 1972 as an ecological reservoir to preserve a southern inland salt lake with its unique limnological features. It has a unique layering in which the deepest areas are very salty and contain hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), which allows the growth of sulfur bacteria in the layers above, where the bacteria have sufficient light to grow. The upper layer of the lake consists of a mixture with fresh water. Mahoney Lake is alkaline ( pH between 7.5 and 9.0) because it has no inflow or outflow. The lake also contains very little oxygen. The lake surface is 18 hectares.
