Coleocephalocereus aureus is a species of plant in the genus Coleocephalocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet refers to the golden yellow thorns.
description
Coleocephalocereus aureus initially grows spherical, later briefly becomes columnar, branches out at the base and forms groups. The cloudy green shoots reach heights of 20 to 40 centimeters with a diameter of 6 to 7 centimeters. There are 10 to 16 ribs , which are still a little dissolved into cusps . The areoles , which carry white wool, sit in the notches between the cusps . The 1 to 4 thick, upright central spines are golden yellow and needle-like. They are 2 to 5 inches long. The 10 to 15 golden yellow radial spines are needle-like and have a length of 0.5 to 1.5 centimeters. The very broad cephalium consists of thick tufts of wool 1 to 2 centimeters long and plenty of golden yellow bristles 2 to 3 centimeters long.
The flowers are yellow to lime green, 3 to 3.7 centimeters long and 1.2 to 1.5 centimeters in diameter. The red fruits reach a diameter of 1.6 to 2.2 centimeters and are 1.2 to 1.5 centimeters long.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Coleocephalocereus aureus is common in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais . It was first described in 1968 by Friedrich Ritter . Synonyms are Buiningia aurea (F.Ritter) Buxb. , Coleocephalocereus aureus subsp. brevicylindricus (Buining) PJBraun and Coleocephalocereus aureus subsp. elongatus (Buining) PJ Brown .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
