Coleocephalocereus goebelianus is a species of plant in the genus Coleocephalocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the German botanist Karl Immanuel Eberhard Goebel .
description
Coleocephalocereus goebelianus grows with upright, columnar shoots , rarely branching near the base . With a diameter of up to 12 centimeters, the shoots reach heights of up to 2 meters (rarely up to 5 meters). There are 10 to 20 (rarely up to 25) ribs . The 4 to 6 protruding central spines are yellowish brown to darker brown, up to 5 centimeters long and usually difficult to distinguish from the radial spines. The 10 to 12 (rarely up to 20) thin, brown radial spines are needle-like and reach a length of 1.5 centimeters. The dark cephalium , up to 20 centimeters wide and 1.5 meters long, consists of plenty of wool and bristles.
The bell-shaped, wide-open flowers are pinkish white and up to 5 centimeters long. The slender, top-shaped fruits are purple-violet, lighter at the base and up to 2 centimeters long.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Coleocephalocereus goebelianus is common in the Brazilian state of Bahia . It was first described as Cereus goebelianus in 1923 by Friedrich Karl Johann Vaupel . Albert Frederik Hendrik Buining placed the species in the genus Coleocephalocereus in 1970 .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
