Colias aurorina is a butterfly ( butterfly ) from the family of the white flies (Pieridae) in the subfamily of the yellow flies .

description

butterfly

The wings of the males of Colias aurorina with a wingspan of 43 to 58 mm have a yellowish to orange base color, which often has a violet shimmer due to the dark scales that have been broken into them. The scent scales at the base of the hind wings are clearly recognizable and mostly yellow-pink, but can also vary from brownish to dark red. The black discoid spot on the forewings is clearly visible. The veins in the dark band on the outer edge of the wing are usually lightly pollinated, but this can be reduced or completely absent. The mostly bright yellow underside of the forewings is dusted by black scales.

The female, with a wingspan of 46 to 68 mm, is mostly white at the top and appears dusty due to the black scales that have been blown into it. But there are also animals with a yellowish to orange basic color. The hind wings are whitish with strong orange discoid spots.

Caterpillars

The caterpillars have the shape of those of the tree whitewash ( Aporia crataegi ), but are shorter. The body is black and finely haired and thus resembles the caterpillar of the black Apollos ( Parnassius mnemosyne ). On each segment there are two pale yellow spots with velvet black spots on the back on each side. There is a broken pale yellow line running down the legs.

Way of life

Colias aurorina flies from June to August. The caterpillars feed on tragacanth ( astragalus ).

distribution

The species occurs in Russia, Greece, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Dagestan, Iran, Syria, Lebanon and Israel.
