Collins Bartholomew

Collins Bartholomew , formerly John Bartholomew and Son , is an old map publisher that was originally based in Edinburgh . He currently belongs to HarperCollins .

history

The company was founded by John Bartholomew Sr. (1805–1861) around 1826. His son John Bartholomew Junior (1831-1893) and his grandson John George Bartholomew (1860-1920) made the company important. John Bartholomew Junior is one of the pioneers in the use of regional colors .

John George Bartholomew in particular developed the company into an editor of its own works. Well-known works were the Times Survey Atlas of the World (1922) and later the Times Atlas of the World (1955-60). Among the popular products in the UK that included on the 1970 map series 100000 National map series: 1 emerged from the series Half Inch to the Mile Maps of competing with the products Ordnance Survey .

In 1989 the company merged with Glasgow- based HarperCollins Verlag to become part of the empire of Rupert Murdoch's News International .
