The Colo (Indonesian: Gunung Colo ) is a volcano on the Indonesian island of Una Una in the Gulf of Tomini . The comparatively low stratovolcano takes up a large part of the island and reaches a height of 507 m. Its caldera is two kilometers in diameter. A small central cone rises in it. Three outbreaks are known from Colo. The last one so far occurred in 1983 and devastated almost the entire island of Una Una.

The volcano is believed to have been caused by cracking as a result of a subduction rollback in the Gulf of Tomini.

Eruption in 1898

An eruption in 1898 only caused property damage. The residents had previously been evacuated.

1983 eruption

A stronger eruption of the Colo was heralded by a series of volcanic quakes from July 9th. The first eruption took place on July 19. As a result of a powerful eruption on July 21st, pyroclastic flows eventually devastated an estimated 80% of Una Una. The population had been evacuated by then, so that there were no victims to complain about. A cloud of smoke and ash rose into the stratosphere and reached neighboring Sulawesi . A British Airways plane on its way to Perth got caught in the volcanic cloud on July 23 and had to return to Singapore . Up until the end of August 1983 there were further violent explosions on the Colo, the last on the 26th of the month. Since then the volcano has been calm again. The volcanologist Maurice Krafft visited the island in mid-August 1983 and documented the damage.
