Coloconger is a genus of bony fish in the order of the eel-like (Anguilliformes). The genus was originally placed in its own family, the Colocongridae, but today it belongs to the Derichthyidae . The species live in the Atlantic , Pacific and Indian Oceans . Specimens of the genus have been caught at depths of 270 to 1134 meters.

The animals are the least elongated eel-like fish and grow to be 37 to 90 centimeters long. Its snout is not pointed, but blunt, the anus is well behind the middle of the body. In English they are therefore called "short-tail eels". The fish do not have teeth on the vomer . The lateral line organ is complete, with most of the pores ending in small tubes. The pectoral fins are well developed. Ventral fins are absent as in all eel-like species. Coloconger species have 142 to 163 vertebrae .
