The long-necked eels (Derichthyidae), also called long-necked eels , live in the deep sea at depths of up to 2000 meters in the Atlantic , Pacific and Indian Oceans . Adult fish live mesopelagic or bathypelagic. The long dorsal fin begins behind the end of the pectoral fins , pelvic fins are missing. The anus is behind the middle of the body. Long-necked halls are 30 to 60 centimeters long, they have 125 to 160 vertebrae .

The genus Derichthys is short-snouted, Nessorhamphus has a long, pointed mouth, Coloconger , until recently the only genus of the monotypical family Colocongridae, has a stocky body with a short mouth for eels.
