The Colonna del Portogallo is a monument in Siena that is located in Viale Vittorio Emanuele II, between Porta Camollia and Antiporto di Camollia .

History and description

The column is reminiscent of a meeting that took place here on February 4, 1452 , between Friedrich III. von Habsburg and Eleonora of Portugal , accompanied by 400 Sienese ladies and the presence of the then Archbishop of Siena Enea Silvio Piccolomini . This event made a great impression on society at the time that it was also represented by Pinturicchio in the Piccolomini library .

The column bears a plaque with the coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of Portugal .
