Antiporto di Camollia

The Antiporto di Camollia is a gateway to the city walls of Siena . It is located on Via Vittorio Emanuele II.

History and description

The Antiporto di Camollia was created from 1262 to 1270 after the battle of Montaperti and the defeat of the Senese republic in the Battaglia di Colle (1269 near Colle di Val d'Elsa ) in order to additionally protect the northern entrance to the city from Florence . The defense complex, called Castellaccia di Camollia , began at Porta Camollia, facing the city, and ended at Antiporto di Camollia.

Inside there are rare traces of picture decorations that have been painted over several times over the centuries.

The Assumption of Mary , painted according to the tradition of Simone Martini , has given way to a fresco with a similar theme, commissioned by Alessandro Casolani in 1585 and completed in 1589 ; At the end of the seventeenth century new interventions and restorations were carried out, first by Antonio Nasini ( 1685 ) and then by his brother Giuseppe Nicola ( 1699 ). During the bombardment of 1944 the last layer of plaster broke off and the Casolani painting was rediscovered, parts of which can still be seen.
