Columns of Hell

Louis Marie Turreau

Columns of Hell ( French Colonnes infernales ) refers to the troops of General Louis Marie Turreau , who implemented the measures ordered by the National Convention to suppress the uprising in the Vendée from January to May 1794 . This included indiscriminate murders of the civilian population as well as the destruction of infrastructure (burning down villages, destroying the crops).

The number of victims can no longer be precisely determined today, but must have been in the tens of thousands, so that the actions of Turreaus' twelve columns are now regarded as genocide .
