Combat Flight Simulator ( CFS for short ) is a series of flight simulators from the software company Microsoft , which are based on the updated engine of the well-known Microsoft Flight Simulator . Since 1998 , three official parts of the CFS have been published, all of which deal with the aerial battles during the Second World War .

Combat Flight Simulator (1998)

In the first part of the CFS , the player takes on the role of a pilot in the German Air Force , the Royal Air Force (RAF) or the US Army Air Forces (USAAF). In this role he has to carry out various tasks, such as flying escorts for bombers, carrying out ground attacks and fighting enemy bombers.

In addition to various individual missions , the first CFS comprised two campaigns: On the one hand, the Battle of Britain in 1940 and, on the other hand, the Allied bomber offensive over Germany in 1943 and 1944.

The first part of the game already has a multiplayer mode via network and internet. The game's engine was essentially based on Flight Simulator 98, which was released a year earlier . Add-ons developed by hobby programmers were partially compatible with both games.

The idea for the first part of the CFS goes back to the plan to publish an add-on for the flight simulator with the title Spitfire , which should allow the player to do dogfights with the title-giving Supermarine Spitfire . Instead of the add-on, the developers opted for a full-fledged game, but this also meant that the game was postponed from mid-1997 to the end of 1998.

Combat Flight Simulator 2: World War II Pacific Theater (2000)

The second part focuses on the hostilities of the world war in the Pacific . The player therefore chooses between participation on the American or Japanese side.

The engine of Flight Simulator 2000 , which is also a year older, formed the basis for the game . In contrast to the first part, the engine has been heavily modified and improved so that there is no compatibility between CFS 2 and its civilian counterpart.

For the German version of the game, the subtitle was translated into " Second World War: Theater of War Pacific ".

A number of player-made expansions have been released for the game.

Combat Flight Simulator 3: Battle for Europe (2002)

The CFS 3 returned to the European theater of war, but did not start operating until mid-1943. The game offered the player - similar to the LucasArts classic Secret Weapons Of The Luftwaffe - the opportunity to fly planes that were no longer used in the historical course of the war. Among other things, the Dornier Do 335 and the Gotha Go 229 were included. As a new game mode, the game offered a dynamic campaign instead of linear campaigns, in which the player could plan missions himself and influence the fictitious course of the war with his strategic skill.

The game was based on Flight Simulator 2002 . Again, the engine was heavily modified.
