Company history
Comerica was founded in 1849 when Elon Farnsworth opened the Detroit Savings Fund Institute. In 1881 the company name (company) changed to "The Detroit Savings Bank" and in 1933 to "Detroit Savings Bank". In 1953 the Detroit Bank, The Birmingham National Bank, Ferndale National Bank and Detroit Warbeek Bank and Trust Company formed the joint venture The Detroit Bank & Trust Company. In 1982 the company changed to what is now Comerica.
Comerica paid $ 66 million in December 1998 for the naming rights to Comerica Park Stadium in Detroit, home of the Detroit Tigers baseball club .
In 2016 Comerica had bank branches in 591 locations.
Partnership with MasterCard
Comerica Bank, Mastercard and the United States Treasury Department joined forces in 2008 to create the Direct Express Debit Mastercard debit card . The US federal government uses this product to make electronic payments to payees who do not have any banking information. Comerica Bank is responsible for issuing the debit card.
