The Commission du Vieux Paris ( CVP ) is a consultative commission of the City of Paris founded in 1897 by Justin de Selves , then Prefect of the Seine department , today chaired by the Mayor of Paris, with its seat in the former Hôtel particulier Hôtel Cromot du Bourg , 9 rue Cadet, in the 9th arrondissement .

The main task of the CVP is to advise the Paris city government on the preservation and development of the city's cultural heritage , with particular attention being paid to the exploration of historical buildings and archaeological sites that are not institutionally protected .

The 55 commission members nominated by the mayor and the city council for the duration of the respective term of office are elected city councilors , heads of authorities or employees of other public institutions, representatives of independent organizations and associations and representatives of the citizens , including experts from various disciplines, university professors and journalists from the specialist press are located. They meet once a month at the Hôtel de Ville to examine the approximately 1,000 applications for demolition permits and feasibility studies submitted to the responsible municipal office , the Direction de l'urbanisme de la Ville de Paris , and to express wishes regarding the preservation or restoration of buildings and discuss current urban heritage issues.

The press pointed out in 2008 that the establishment of a municipal sub-commission to speed up the examination of the files - which is intended to allow a short-term increase in social housing, especially in buildings in Paris' old town areas - is accompanied by a loss of influence of the CVP, which is involved in the anachronistic renovation work and the associated destruction.

The Commission du Vieux Paris published its findings and research results from 1978 to 2001 in the regularly published Cahiers de la Rotonde , the title of which derives from the CVP's seat at the time in the Rotonde de la Villette, originally built by Claude-Nicolas Ledoux as a customs guard house derived. Since 2004 she has published the journal Paris Patrimoine: Histoire de l'architecture et archéologie twice a year .
