Committee of Legal Advisers on Public International Law

The Committee of Legal Advisers on Public International Law (CAHDI) is the Council of Europe's committee of legal advisers on international law .

It is an intergovernmental committee that includes all legal advisers from the 47 member states of the Council of Europe as well as from the observing states and international organizations.

CAHDI holds a meeting twice a year.

aims

  • Develop the role of international law and bring national viewpoints closer together;
  • Share experiences to apply by exchanging views on different topics;
  • Providing a framework for international cooperation to enhance the role and influence of the development of international law by bringing legal advisors together to pool their experience ;;
  • Illustrate the work of other international bodies and units in their fields of competence and help Member States to adopt a common position.

Documents of importance to CAHDI

There are several different sources of documents that are relevant to the work of the CADHI, among others

  • European treaties, such as the European Convention on the Peaceful Settlement of Disputes, the European Convention on Consular Functions, the Protocol on the Protection of Displaced Persons, the Protocol on Consular Functions with regard to Civil Aviation, the European Convention on the Abolition of Laws, carried out by diplomats and consuls, the European Convention on State Immunity and its additional protocol;
  • and resolutions and recommendations of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, such as resolution (64) 10 on the publication of short articles on state practice in the field of international law or resolution (68) 17 on the requirement for the classification of documents with regard to state practice in the field of international law.
