The Community of the Resurrection ( German  community of the resurrection ) is an Anglican religious community for men.

history

It was founded in 1892 by a total of six fellow believers, including the charismatic Charles Gore and Walter Howard Frere (1863–1938, later Bishop of Truro ) in Radley- Vicarage. In 1898 they moved into the property in Mirfield to be as close as possible to the industrial centers that were flourishing at the time. From the beginning, the group sought the public by holding church services there or displaying their handicrafts.

From the beginning a network with foreign communities was built up. The first was in South Africa , there are currently 35. In Germany, they cooperate with the Benedictine Abbey of St. Matthias in Trier .

Life

The community has an agenda that alternates between devotion, work, and rest. The very cosmopolitan way of life differs significantly from the “ Vita contemplativa ” way of life of other monks in the daily routine . Annual vows were taken by all members of the community until 1945 . When the membership decreased, this procedure against a "voluntary promise" was stopped. Today the promise is roughly: "... to stay in the community for life according to its rules".

The Order's affiliated College of the Resurrection at Mirfield was the first theological college in England to educate its future priests without charging tuition or other means.

One of the most famous visitors was the theologian and prominent representative of the Confessing Church Dietrich Bonhoeffer in 1930.
