Comodo Internet Security is security software from the Comodo Group that originally only sold digital certificates . The personal firewall contained in the software package protects against both external attacks and unwanted connections between the computer and the Internet. It behaves very restrictively even with regard to complex evasion attempts and is said to be superior to other commercial personal firewalls in terms of its detection rate in repeated tests. The virus scanner included detected 49 out of 50 viruses in another test, but also fell for almost four times as many supposed viruses as a well-known competitor, and is uncomfortably chatty. The full version is chargeable, the firewall alone is free.

Features and functions

The firewall has a rule-based global network filter . An application filter is subordinate to this. Here rights or prohibitions are assigned to programs using the Internet (for incoming or outgoing traffic). Additional functions are available, such as program subcomponent monitoring.

When a program requests access to the Internet, a pop-up window appears. Here access can be allowed or prohibited and the selection can be saved if necessary. The settings determine whether a query should only be made once for each program or several times if it accesses different IP addresses (or additionally for accesses to different ports). The sophistication of the rules, which are automatically created by saving the selection in the popups, also depends on this so-called alarm frequency level.

During installation, the software can optionally automatically create a simple set of rules. The operation of the firewall (security suite) can be compared with the free version of ZoneAlarm . Both firewalls are more suitable for users with basic knowledge who already know (or want to learn) how to create rules in a firewall and who value the level of detail of the rules that can be set. Comodo goes one step further in all areas and can be very precisely adapted in every single function. Partitions, folders, files can be locked for any other user. The program can be protected from manipulation of the rules with a password.
