history

CGK is the successor company to Telefunken Computer GmbH (TC) founded in 1971 in Konstanz on Lake Constance by AEG in cooperation with Nixdorf Computer AG . The aim of the AEG-Nixdorf cooperation was to further develop the Telefunken TR 440 mainframe computer , to make it IBM-compatible and thus competitive in the long term. As early as 1973, however, it was foreseeable that the set goals could not be achieved and with the help of the federal government, Siemens AG took over the loss-making company as a 100% subsidiary on July 19, 1974 and changed the company name to Computer Gesellschaft Konstanz. At that time, around 1,600 people were employed.

The Computer Gesellschaft Konstanz played a major role in the development of ICR systems (intelligent character recognition) . Techniques such as angular segment analysis, dictionary comparison and voting were introduced in the early years, and the CGK character recognition products were "state of the art" for years and guaranteed comparatively high reliability.

Several German universities use the CGK's TR 440 mainframe computer system in their data centers . For example the University of Marburg, where the Federal Minister of Education and Research , Hans Matthöfer , was present at the inauguration in 1976 .

In addition to in-house developments, Reco Engines - for example PolyFont or RecoStar - and scanners , but some products from AEG were also sold. CGK was a SAP integrator back in 1996 .

In 1997, the character recognition division (Recognition Systems Division) of Siemens ElectroCom GmbH was incorporated into the CGK.

In April 2000 the computer company was taken over by the Océ group and operated under the name Océ Document Technologies GmbH . After extensive renovation measures, the number of employees in 2000 was around 500 people.

In 2004, the image acquisition / image processing division was spun off as Chromasens GmbH .

At the beginning of 2008, Captaris Inc. from Bellevue in the US state of Washington took over Océ Document Technologies GmbH. The company name was changed to Captaris Document Technologies GmbH .

On November 3, 2008, the Canadian Open Text Corporation acquired Captaris Inc. and thus also incorporated its subsidiary Captaris Document Technologies GmbH as a business unit for character recognition.

The main areas of business are automated character recognition, document analysis and business process optimization as well as automatic receipt and document processing.
