history

The company traces its history back to a regional haulage company founded by Leland James in Portland in 1929 . The merger with other acquired companies resulted in the Consolidated Truck Lines , renamed Consolidated Freightways (CF) in 1939 . In the 1990s it expanded into the air freight sector and abroad. In 1996 Consolidated Freightways was spun off from the group and became an independent company. The remaining part of the group became CNF, Inc. with the three subsidiaries Menlo Logistics , Emery World Airlines and the newly founded Con-Way. Consolidated Freightways filed for bankruptcy in 2002. After Emery World Airlines aircraft had two accidents in the 1990s due to maintenance deficiencies, flight operations were prohibited by the regulatory authorities, and in 2004 the line was sold to UPS and renamed. 2006 CNF, Inc. in Con-way, Inc. renamed. In 2007, Con-way took over Contract Freighters, Inc. (CFI). In 2011, Con-way relocated its headquarters from San Mateo, California, to Ann Arbor , Michigan. In September 2015, XPO Logistics announced that it would take over Con-way. The acquisition was completed on October 30, 2015.
