Confédération française des travailleurs chrétiens

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Confédération française des travailleurs chrétiens (CFTC) (French Confederation of Christian Workers) is a French trade union federation with a Christian-Democratic orientation with currently around 130,000 members.

The CFTC is a member of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC). In the membership list of the IGB, membership is given as 140,000 (as of November 2017).

history

The association was founded in 1919 through the merger of 321 trade unions. The program was based on the Catholic social teaching according to the encyclical Rerum Novarum of Pope Leo XIII. on. Therefore a revolution, as the instrument of which the communist rival association CGT saw itself , was always rejected by the CFTC in favor of reforms.

In 1964 , a majority of the members of the CFTC opted for secularization and renamed the Confédération française démocratique du travail CFDT. About ten percent of the members then left the organization and re-founded the CFTC.

Political orientation

Politically, the CFTC is further to the right than the CFDT, its voters are mostly close to Christian Democratic and conservative politicians, such as the former UDF or today's UMP . It is the only trade union confederation in France whose members voted for the right-wing extremist candidate Le Pen with an above-average number of votes in the 2002 French presidential election . He received 19% of the vote in the first ballot, as opposed to 39% for the conservative candidate Jacques Chirac and only 3 percent for the socialist candidate Lionel Jospin . In 2012, 42% of its members said they had voted for Nicolas Sarkozy , compared with 20% for François Hollande and 12% each for François Bayrou and Marine Le Pen .
