The Confessio Virtembergica (German Württemberg confession ) is a Lutheran confession written mainly by Johannes Brenz , which was presented to the Council of Trent in 1552 .

Origin and Distribution

The Confessio Virtembergica was published in 1551 by the reformer Johannes Brenz on behalf of Duke Christoph von Württemberg in response to the Council of Trent. Matthäus Alber , Jacob Beurlin , Andreas Cellarius , Jacob Heerbrand and Johann Isenmann contributed to its creation and distribution .

In 1552 the Confessio Virtembergica was the only evangelical confession that was given to the Council of Trento. In 1553 it became a compulsory confession for the Protestant Church in Württemberg. It is an impressive document because it tries to communicate with the Catholic side from an evangelical perspective. It had an impact primarily on the Württemberg church ordinances of 1559, but also on the church ordinances of other areas.
