A congada is a dramatic folk dance in Brazil in which both African and Portuguese - Catholic musical traditions are mixed together through syncretism .

It belongs to the música nordestina , the music of the Brazilian northeast. The epic chants are accompanied by percussion music ( caixa , zabumba , chocalho ) and a guitar ( violão ).

These are religiously inspired folk festivals, mostly in honor of the patron saint São Benedicto or the Festa de Nossa Senhora do Rosário . A congada was mentioned for the first time in 1760. The ceremonies are usually performed in front of churches. An essential part is the depiction of the coronation of the Congo king and a queen.
