The Connaught Building ( English Connaught Building , French Édifice Connaught ) is a federal administration building in the Canadian capital Ottawa . The Canadian tax authorities are headquartered here. The complex has been classified as a national historical site since 1990 , and the building itself has been recognized as a monument of national importance since 1988.
Location and description
The Connaught building is located between Mackenzie Avenue and Sussex Drive next to the US Embassy in the Lowertown district . The Château Laurier , the former building of the Geological Survey of Canada (both also national historical sites ) and Major's Hill Park are in the immediate vicinity .
It has an elongated rectangular floor plan and a raised central section with entrance portals on both sides of the street. The two entrances are on different floors as Mackenzie Avenue is on a higher level than Sussex Drive. There are turrets at every corner and the facade is designed in the Tudor Revival style .
history
Construction began in 1913. It was designed by David Ewart , the chief architect for federal building projects at the time. It was used by financial authorities from the start and named after Arthur, 1st Duke of Connaught and Strathearn , who then served as Governor General of Canada .
Today the headquarters of the Canada Revenue Agency ( French Agence du revenu du Canada ) is located here . Both the head of the authority and the responsible minister have their offices here.
