Constantin Andreou

Constantin Andreou (actually Konstantínos Andréou , Greek Κωνσταντίνος Ανδρέου , born March 24, 1917 in São Paulo ; † October 8, 2007 in Athens ) was an important Greco-French painter and sculptor .

Andreou was born in the Brazilian city ​​of São Paulo to Greek parents. When he was eight years old, the family returned to Greece .

In 1940 he was drafted into the Greek army and fought in World War II . After the occupation of Greece by German, Italian and Bulgarian troops, he joined the armed resistance.

After the end of World War II, Andreou received a grant from the French government in 1945 and went to Paris .

Andreou first welded brass plates together in sculpture in 1947. This new art technique he developed allowed him to find new forms of expression.

In Paris, Andreou met some of the most important artists of the time and worked with them, including Le Corbusier . Andreou's paintings have been exhibited alongside works of art by eminent artists such as Picasso , Henri Matisse, and Max Ernst .

Andreou has received numerous French and international awards, including a. In 1988 he was awarded the Grand prix Antoine Pevsner for his sculptures.

In 2001, the French government appointed him Knight of the Legion of Honor (Croix de Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur), a year later he was commander and in 2005 he was honored with the title of Officer de l ' Ordre des Arts et des Lettres .
