Constantin Schroeder (* 1980 in Hamburg , as Constantin Freiherr von Schröder ) is a German painter .

Life

Constantin Schroeder studied Protestant theology and philosophy at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 2001 to 2007 as well as modern German philology and art history at the Technical University of Berlin with a master's degree . Constantin Schroeder lives and works in Berlin and Hamburg.

In his mostly large-format and mostly photo-realistic oil paintings, Schroeder depicts unreal worlds of images. He paints idealized figures, ghosts and heroes , works on interpersonal puzzles and uses iconography to convey questions about one's own existence and the freedom of the self. It shows violence and the loss of individuality and wants to illustrate body cult and body criticism at the same time. He often combines these topics with classic motifs and elements from advertising, uses found photographs and is inspired by everyday scenes.

Schroeder transfers the stylistic device of the ellipse , known from literature and rhetoric , to the formation of grammatical and intentionally incomplete sentences. Through white gaps, he leaves the viewer the task of relating elements that are not directly given by the picture and thus independently thinking or reconstructing a thought that has been left open. The gaps, which are reminiscent of the “natural light character of medieval gold ground painting”, underline the narrative undefined picture situations and give the works their characteristic mysteriousness. Schroeder focuses on the observer function and the process of emotional perception. The work is only completed by the viewer, who, while interpreting, projects his or her reality into what is seen.
