Consus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Consus was one of the gods of the Roman religion , which is only documented by a few passages in the text and inscriptions. He was the god of the harvest. In this capacity he formed a pair of gods with Ops Consiva . His altar near the Circus Maximus , like the stored harvest, was underground and was only excavated during Consus' festivals.

Its festivals, called Consualia , were celebrated on August 21 (XII Kalendas Septembres ) after the grain was sowed and on December 15 after the harvest. Horse , mule and especially donkey races were held at the festivals , since the donkey was the sacred animal of Consus. Animals used in agriculture were also decorated.

According to legend, Consus was also the god who advised Romulus to rob the Sabine women . Titus Livius reports that the Sabine virgins were stolen during the consularia . However, he narrates the festival as consecrated to Neptune equestri .

In late antiquity an altar with an inscription for Consus was erected in the Circus Maximus.
