Control and Resistance is the second and so far last studio album by the US progressive metal band Watchtower . It was released on Noise Records in 1989 and is considered to be groundbreaking in the development of the genre.
Creation and publication
After the debut album, Billy White left the band in 1986 and Jason McMaster in 1988, they were replaced by Ron Jarzombek and Mike Soliz. The latter, however, soon got out again, so Alan Tecchio of the just disbanded Hades became the singer for the second album. Control and Resistance was recorded in Berlin in August 1989 , with some lyrics and compositions from Billy White. The year after the album was released, Alan Tecchio left the band for the third time.

style
Watchtower play technical progressive metal influenced by Thrash Metal with complex structures, many breaks and hard riffs , some catchy harmonies and high vocals. Occasionally hints of fusion and the contemporary style of bands like Rush , Queensrÿche , Mekong Delta , Sieges Even , Metallica or Yngwie Malmsteen can be heard.
reception
Control and Resistance was positively received by the press in 1989 and is now considered a classic of progressive metal, but did not bring the band any financial success. The baby blue pages sometimes complain that Tecchio's high vocals are inappropriate, but Nik Brückner sums up, “The album is more complex, fiddly, restless, daring, faster - and at the same time more confident and casual than the debut. The complexity is impressive, the virtuoso implementation even more. "Thomas Kupfer from Rock Hard praises," This disc impressively lives up to the countless advance praise that the group has already received, "Boris Kaiser" discovers arsenals full of hooklines and Harmonies, the sustainability of which [...] no waking mind should doubt ”. Both Rock Hard and eclipsed magazine included Control and Resistance in their respective lists of major prog metal albums.
