Band history

The band began their musical career in 1953 as the house band of the Moulin Rouge Club in Lake Charles , Louisiana. At first they called themselves "The Boogie Ramblers". Lead singer was Shelton Dunaway; A little later he shared this task with Huey "Cookie" Thierry; both also played the saxophone. Other band members were Sidney "Hot Rod" Reynaud (saxophone), Marshall Laday or LeDee (guitar), Ernest Jacobs (piano), Joe "Blue" Landry (bass) and Ivory Jackson (drums).

In 1955 they released Cindy Lou and Such As Love on Goldband Records. They became known regionally and performed with stars like Jerry Lee Lewis and Fats Domino . In 1956, Cookie Thierry became the front man of the group that was now called "Cookie & the Boogie Ramblers". Soon they changed their name again to its final version "Cookie & the Cupcakes".

In 1957 they recorded Mathilda for Judd Records . The song rose to number 47 in the Billboard charts in early 1959. They had a few smaller hits, but could not repeat the success of "Mathilda".

In 1965, Thierry moved to Los Angeles, and the cupcakes carried on without him. The new lead singer was "Little Alfred" (or "Lil 'Alfred") Babino. With Ernest Jacobs as band leader, the group continued to perform for a few years, but broke up in the early 1970s.

Thierry reappeared in the 1990s. Until his death in 1997, he occasionally performed with the band at blues festivals and clubs. Then "Little Alfred" took over his role; he died in Lake Charles in 2006.

In 1995 Cookie & the Cupcakes were inducted into the Gulf Coast Museum's Music Hall of Fame.
