Cool hip noise
Cool Hipnoise is a Portuguese band that mixes different styles such as reggae , soul , funk , afrobeat and hip-hop .
Career
The band was founded in 1994 by Tiago Santos (guitar), João Gomes (keyboards), Paulo Muiños (sax.), Nuno Reis (trumpet), Francisco Rebelo (bass) and Melo D (vocals).
Tiago Santos (guitar) and Francisco Rebelo (bass) made music together for the first time in February 1994 at jazz courses at the Hot Club de Portugal in Lisbon . Together with 3 other course participants, João Gomes (keyboards), Paulo Muiños (sax.), Nuno Reis (trumpet), they share their musical preferences and their curiosity for other musical styles and form the band. After months of playing together and jamming sessions with various rappers who were friends , they took Melo D. into the band as a singer. The first own pieces are created. At that time, a thriving hip-hop scene was beginning to develop in the greater Lisbon area, and Cool Hipnoise feel attached to it in a broader sense and incorporate similar influences. They are equally oriented towards jazz and hip-hop and thus develop their own sound patterns. In the beginning you were still a hip-hop-influenced acid jazz group, but gradually more style influences were added, from soul, funk and African and Brazilian musical styles. Especially after focusing on more dub elements, they developed a sound that brought them more attention and international recognition. Melo D left the band in 2000 and embarked on a solo career.
The band has had a strong international focus since its inception. The British Luke Williamson (Big Chees All Stars) produced their debut album in 1995, the following were produced by the German Ralf Droesemeyer (Agogo Records) and the British Nick Manasseh. In addition to many international DJs, they have also recorded with the Last Poets . They completed tours in Spain and received lasting attention in France. They also recorded videos in Angola and were involved in a successful, internationally recognized campaign against prejudice against the mentally handicapped.
In Germany, recordings of them appeared on the Select Cuts label in what was then EFA .
In recent years they have been a little less active, but keep making contributions to projects such as the 2011 José Afonso tribute sampler "Reintervenção" .
Santos, Rebelo and Gomes also lead another band project with Spaceboys , which is dedicated to more electronic varieties of their music. Rebelo and Gomes are also musicians in the soul / trip-hop band Orelha Negra .
