The Cooperativa di Consumatori , or coop for short , is one of the largest retail chains in Italy . It operates supermarkets and hypermarkets ( Ipercoop ) and the discounter Dico .

The first consumer cooperative in Italy was founded in Turin in 1854.

Today the Coop consists of 135 customer companies of various sizes and areas. The larger Coop stores are largely supraregional, whereas the smaller branches are organized regionally. Although the individual companies are legally and administratively independent, they are subordinate to the main organization Coop Italia .

Coop is the largest provider among the Italian retail chains: in 2006 it achieved a market share of 17.9% and sales of 11.8 billion euros. There are 1,331 branches across Italy.

From October 2014, Coop Italia will be a member of Coopernic , a purchasing group of European retail chains.

Coop Group's supermarkets can be divided into four categories:

  • small supermarkets (so-called superette , up to 1,000 m²) only have a limited range of groceries and can usually be found in city centers. They operate under the name InCoop .
  • medium-sized supermarkets (up to 2,000–2,500 m²) carry a wider range of groceries.
  • Large supermarkets or superstores (up to 3,000–3,500 m²) carry a wide range of groceries and also a small amount of everyday items.
  • Hypermarkets (4,000–15,000 m²) carry a very wide range of groceries, luxury goods and everyday items as well as electrical and technical departments, and in individual cases also opticians and pharmacies . They operate under the name ipercoop

The nine large trading cooperatives are structured as follows:

    • Novacoop (provinces of Turin, Biella, Vercelli, Novara, Verbania, Varese, Milan, Cuneo, Asti, Alessandria)
    • Coop Liguria (Provinces of Genova, Savona, La Spezia, Imperia, Alessandria, Cuneo)
    • Coop Lombardia (provinces of Varese, Como, Milan, Lodi, Pavia, Cremona, Brescia)
  • Adriatic region
    • Coop Consumatori Nordest (Provinces of Piacenza, Parma, Reggio Emilia, Mantova, Brescia, Venice, Treviso, Rovigo, Pordenone, Udine, Gorizia, Trieste)
    • Coop Estense (provinces of Modena, Ferrara, Foggia, Bari, Taranto, Lecce)
    • Coop Adriatica (provinces of Belluno, Vicenza, Padua, Venezia, Treviso, Rovigo, Bologna, Ferrara, Ravenna, Forlì-Cesena, Rimini, Pesaro-Urbino, Ancona, Macerata, Ascoli Piceno, Chieti, Caorle)
  • Tyrrhenia region
    • Unicoop Firenze (provinces of Lucca, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato, Florence, Arezzo, Siena)

In addition to food and everyday items, the coop group also offers medicines, books, travel, home improvement, banking and mobile phone contracts at various locations.
