Coptodon tholloni can reach a length of 22 to 30 cm, the head occupies 32.3 to 35% of the standard length . The body is oval, the front profile can be slightly indented. The eyes are relatively large. The mouth is big. The jaws are covered with two to four rows of teeth. The teeth of the outer row are narrow and two-pointed. The anal fin is very dark to blackish, sometimes with a reddish tinge. The dorsal fin is gray, with a tilapia spot and a few light spots. The caudal fin is dark with numerous spots on the rear edge.
