Cora Barbara Hennel
Cora Barbara Hennel (born January 21, 1886 in Evansville (Indiana) , United States , † June 26, 1947 in Bloomington (Indiana) ) was an American mathematician and university professor. She became the first woman to earn a PhD in mathematics from Indiana University Bloomington in 1912 .
life and work
Hennel studied at Indiana University Bloomington in 1903 and earned her bachelor's degree in 1907 . She earned her Masters in Mathematics in 1908 and was appointed instructor at the Indiana Department of Mathematics in 1909. She received her doctorate in 1912 under Robert Daniel Carmichael at Indiana University with the dissertation: Transformations and Invariants Connected with Linear Homogeneous Difference Equations and Other Functional Equations. This work was published in the American Journal of Mathematics in 1913 . She joined the American Mathematical Society in 1913 . In 1916 she was appointed assistant professor, in 1923 as associate professor and in 1936 as professor. At the time of her promotion to full professor, she was one of only four women in Indiana to hold that position. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa , Sigma Xi , Pi Lambda Theta , the Mortar Board, and the Indiana Academy of Science . She served as president of the local chapter of the AAUP and the American Association of University Women, and chair of the Indiana Section of the Mathematical Association of America .
