The Cordillera Domeyko is a mountain range of the Andean Precordillere in northern Chile . It was named after the Polish geologist Ignacy Domeyko and forms the eastern boundary of the flat part of the Atacama Desert .
The mountain range is 600 km long and lies in a north-south direction parallel to the Andean-West Cordillera . At altitudes often over 3000 m, the highest mountain is Cerro Quimal with 4278 m. The mountain range is one of the mountains with the lowest rainfall on earth.
Gold - and silver - deposits in the volcanic rock make the area one of the potentially most productive mining areas for these ores.
