features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 34 to 50 millimeters. On the front wings gray-brown stains prevail. In the darkened middle field there is a characteristic white sign, for example in the form of the letter gamma from the Greek alphabet. This gamma symbol is broad and usually filled in light gray. The two thin spouts reach the front edge in their extension and are cut by the inner transverse line. The wavy line is clearly jagged, the submarginal region heavily darkened. The hind wings are gray-brown without drawing, darkened at the edge. The thorax is furry and has a few tufts of hair, the proboscis is well developed.

Caterpillar, pupa

Adult caterpillars are green in color. They have thin whitish back and side back lines as well as wider, also whitish side and transverse lines.

The doll shows a black-brown back and yellow-green wing sheaths.

Similar species

There is a distant similarity to the gamma owl ( Autographa gamma ), in which the gamma symbol is always filled in silver-white and its ends do not extend to the front edge.

distribution and habitat

Cornutiplusia circumflexa occurs in large parts of Africa including the Canary Islands and occasionally in the northern Mediterranean . The eastern distribution extends to the Urals , the southern through Asia to Japan . Butterflies were very rarely found in England and Switzerland . However, they are not classic migratory butterflies . The species predominantly inhabits steppe and desert areas as well as gardens and cultural landscapes.

Way of life

The moths of Cornutiplusia circumflexa form consecutive generations. They are diurnal and visit different flowers. At night they also appear on artificial light sources , but not on bait . The caterpillars prefer to feed on the leaves of the nightshade family (Solanaceae), legumes (Fabaceae) and cruciferous vegetables (Cruciferae) as well as on cultivated plants such as vegetable cabbage , potatoes and kidney beans .
