Coryphantha maliterrarum is a species of plant in the genus Coryphantha from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet maliterrarum is derived from the Latin words malus for 'bad' and terra for 'land' and refers to the occurrence of the species in the badlands .

description

Coryphantha maliterrarum initially grows individually and forms groups with age. The slightly depressed spherical, cloudy gray-green shoots reach heights of up to 11 centimeters with a diameter of 10 centimeters. The up to 12 millimeters long, solid, conical warts are angular towards their tips. They become somewhat rhomboid with age. The axillae are initially covered with white wool and later bald. Nectar glands are absent. The mostly single strong, black central spine , which can occasionally be missing, turns gray with age. It is awl, stiff, curved downwards and up to 1.5 inches long. The twelve to 14 thin, awl, straight to slightly curved radial spines are dirty white, have a darker tip and are 1.2 to 1.5 centimeters long.

The lemon-yellow flowers reach a diameter of 4 to 5 centimeters. The obovate fruits are gray-green.

Distribution and systematics

Coryphantha maliterrarum is found in the Mexican state of Querétaro in badland formations on gypsum-rich soils at altitudes of 1,600 meters.

The first description by Lewis Bremer was published in 1984. Reto F. Dicht and Adrian D. Lüthy treated Coryphantha maliterrarum in 2001 as a synonym of Coryphantha cornifera .
