Costamare is an Athens shipping company that currently operates 78 container ships and chartered them out to companies such as Mærsk Line , Mediterranean Shipping Company , COSCO and Hapag-Lloyd . She is considered one of the most important owners of container ships worldwide.
history
The company was founded in 1975 by the captain Vasileios Konstantakopoulos with a cargo ship in Piraeus . In 1984 the fleet was converted to container ships with the purchase of four container ships. In 1994 the company already owned 32 container ships. In 1997 the company headquarters was relocated to Athens.
In 2006, Costamare put the COSCO Ningbo into service, which belongs to a series of five container ships, which at that time were among the largest container ships in the world with 9469 TEU slots . In 2006, the COSCO Ningbo was the longest ship that passed the Elbe after 1975. In 2011 the container ship Rena ran on the Astrolabe Reef off New Zealand , broke apart and caused serious oil pollution in the sea area concerned .
