Costas M. Soukoulis (* as Agios Ioannis Corinthias, January 15, 1951 in Athens ) is a Greek-American physicist who deals with theoretical solid-state physics and novel optical materials.

Soukoulis received his bachelor's degree from the University of Athens in 1974 and his master's degree from the University of Chicago in 1975 , where he received his doctorate in 1978. He then worked at the Enrico Fermi Institute at the University of Chicago and from 1981 to 1984 at Exxon Research. In 1984 he became an assistant professor at Iowa State University and was visiting professor at the University of Crete in 1986/87. In 1986 he became associate professor and in 1990 professor at Iowa State University (at the Ames Laboratory). He has been a Frances M. Craig Professor there since 2007 and he also has the rank of Distinguished Professor .

He dealt with disordered systems in solid state physics (spin glasses, random magnets, effect of disorder in nonlinear systems, electronic properties and transport in amorphous semiconductors), especially localization in electronic and photonic systems, random fields and random lasers and wave propagation in disordered media, photonic crystals, photonic band gaps and superconductivity as well as novel, artificially produced optical materials (so-called metamaterials such as left-handed materials). He works mostly theoretically, but holds several patents.

In 2009 he showed that metamaterials can cause a repulsive Casimir effect .

In 2014 he received the Max Born Award , in 2013 the James McGroddy Prize for New Materials from the APS and in 2005 the Descartes Prize with the Excel team. In 1991 he received the Humboldt Research Award , with which he was at the University of Karlsruhe (and again in 2002). He became a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) in 1991, the Optical Society of America in 2002, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2002 . In 2011 he received an honorary doctorate from the Free University of Brussels.

From 2008 to 2011 he was editor of Optics Letters and he has been on the editorial board of Physical Review Letters and Photonic Nanostructures since 2012.
