Saint Laurent Church

Couillet is a municipality in the Belgian city of Charleroi on the banks of the Sambre in the province of Hainaut .

history

Couillet was already the site of a monastery in the Carolingian era . The Saint-Laurent church was built on its foundation walls in the 11th century.

In the 19th century, Couillet advanced to become an industrial community like almost all the other villages in the Charleroi coalfield. In Couillet, the industrialist Ernest Solvay built the first factory for the industrial production of soda from table salt or Glauber's salt in order to supply the chemical industry with it.

In the 1960s, the decline of the coal and steel industry (closure of the mines ) hit the community hard. Nevertheless, it still had almost 15,000 inhabitants in 1977 when it was opened up as a suburb in the city of Charleroi as a result of municipal reform .

Sports

The soccer club Royale Association Cercle Sportif (RCSA) Couillet (German: Königliche Vereinigung Sportkreis), founded in 1919, will play in the fourth Belgian league in the 2009/10 season.
