Coven is an American power and thrash metal band from Seattle , Washington , which was founded in 1984, disbanded around 1993 and reunited in 2012 under the name Coven [metal] .

history

The band was formed in 1984 by guitarists Dean Babbitt and Paul Hash, drummer Neal Babbitt, bassist Gary Peebles and singer Jay Clark. Together they recorded their debut album Blessed Is the Black between June and October 1986 and released it in 1988 via Ever Rat Records . The debut album was distributed via Medusa Records . Brad Hull of Forced Entry also contributed a guitar solo to the album. In 1989, Death Walks Behind You was followed by the second album, which this time was released directly by Medusa Records. The publication followed various appearances, including a small tour of North America .

In 1993, Boneless Christian was followed by the next album, which was released via Ever Rat Records and distributed via Red Light Records . By then, drummer Jason Moody had already replaced founding member Neal Babbitt. Bassist Gary Peebles also left the band, so Dean Babbit also played the bass on the album.

After a long break, the band got back together under the name Coven [metal]. Singer Jamie Carter, bassist Eric Close and guitarist The Underbishop were the new members of the band.

style

The band calls their music “shock-comedy-thrash” and describes the style on Blessed Is the Black as “no-nonsense thrash mixed with some of the most hideous and obnoxious lyrics imaginable. No destination was spared the band's biting humor, but a particular favorite seemed to be organized religion ... and more specifically Christianity. ”On The BNR Metal Pages , the debut album's music is described as“ simple but heavier early thrash ”. The songs are mostly held at a medium tempo and occasionally tend towards dark Power Metal. postmortem2006 from Ultimate-Guitar.Com described the sound as "in some places almost like a bastard cross between Helloween and Kreator ", Out of the Grave sometimes reminds of a thrash-heavy version of Iron Maiden .

On Death Walks Behind You , the band pursued a more thrash-metal style.

Allmusic's Steve Huey described the sound of Boneless Christian as an "amelodic version of Gwar ". Reading the lyrics, which mostly mock Christianity, is much more fun than listening to the band. Even with Classic Thrash that the album was musically little to offer were complaints.
