The Cow Green Reservoir is a reservoir in England . The border between Cumbria and County Durham lies in the reservoir formed by the River Tees .

The reservoir was built between 1967 and 1971 to supply the Teesside industry with water. The construction of the reservoir was controversial as conservationists feared for the habitat of the Viola rupestris (Teesdale Violet). In response, the Moor House-Upper Teesdale Nature Reserve was created. The reservoir is located in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty .

During extremely low water levels in the reservoir, a previously unknown settlement from the Bronze Age was uncovered in the reservoir.

Almost immediately after the tea leaves the reservoir, it flows over the rapids of the Cauldron Snout .

Legends

Before the construction of the reservoir, children in particular were warned not to go too close to the Tees river, as a mermaid with green hair and the name Peg Powler is said to live in the water . The mermaid is said to have had a particular hunger for children and her presence was indicated by a foam called Peg Powler Suds .
