At 893 m, Cross Fell is the highest mountain in the Pennines and also the highest mountain in England outside the Lake District . It is located in the county of Cumbria in the north of England and belongs to the Marilyn type . The Cross Fell is part of the Moor House and Cross Fell Site of Special Scientific Interest .

The summit, a stony plateau, is part of a 20 km long ridge that runs northwest to southeast and also includes the peaks of Little Dun Fell (842 m) and Great Dun Fell (849 m). Together, the three mountains form a precipice that towers high above the valley of the River Eden in the west and slopes gently towards the valleys of the Tyne and the Tees in the northeast .
When the view is clear, several mountains of the Lake District , the Cheviot Hills and across the Solway Firth the Southern Uplands in Scotland can be seen from the summit .
The local flora includes a number of rare alpine plants such as star saxifrage and alpine forget-me-not , and on the north side of the mountain is an extensive raised bog .

Cross Fell and the neighboring mountains consist mainly of hard limestone rock , interspersed with layers of slate and sandstone . Every year 2800 mm of precipitation falls on the mountain, in winter the summit is mostly continuously covered with snow.
Helmet wind
A local weather phenomenon occurs at the Cross Fell, the Helm Wind or Helm for short , the only named wind phenomenon in Great Britain. A strong east or north-east wind is forced to climb the Cross Fell, forms a cap or ring-shaped cloud (called a helmet bar ) around the mountain and falls on the steep southwest flank into the lowlands, where it can reach hurricane strengths and cause considerable damage. The wind occurs suddenly and can last for several hours or several days.
Development
The most famous way over Cross Fell is the Pennine Way . But there are other ways up the mountain, a circular hike is possible from Kirkland . The nearest train stations are in Appleby and Langwathby on the Settle – Carlisle railway line , and an irregular bus service from there to Kirkland is provided by the volunteer Fellrunner Bus .
A hike over Cross Fell is only recommended in good weather and with appropriate equipment, as the summit remains snowy for a long time in spring, is often covered in clouds and fog and is exposed to strong winds.
