Cowell Island

Cowell Island is a small island off the Ingrid Christensen coast of Princess Elisabeth Land, East Antarctica . It lies, partially enclosed in a glacier tongue , 5 km west-southwest of the island of Hovden .

Norwegian cartographers mapped it using aerial photographs taken during the Lars Christensen Expedition in 1936/37 . A survey team led by geodesist Maxwell John Corry (* 1940) visited them in February 1969 as part of a campaign by the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions . The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia named them on May 18, 1971 after William D. Cowell, cook at Mawson Station and participant in the 1969 exploration of the Prince Charles Mountains .
