Coordinates: 33 ° 49 ' S , 148 ° 42' O Cowra Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 2,808.8 km² and has 12,460 inhabitants.
Cowra is located in the Central West region about 200 km north of the Australian capital Canberra and 330 km west of the metropolis Sydney . The area comprises 40 hamlets and hamlets, including Billimari, Cowra , Darby Falls, Gooloogong, Morongla, Mount McDonald, Noonbinna, Wattamondara, Woodstock and parts of Canowindra, Koorawatha and Wyangala. The Shire Council is based in Cowra, which is home to around 8,200 residents.
In Canowindra there is an annual balloon festival, the "Marti¹s Balloon Fiesta", which attracts more than 20,000 visitors. It is one of the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere. The place is about 33 km north of Cowra and is called "Ballooning Capital of Australia".

The Cowra Shire Council has ten members who are elected by LGA residents. Cowra is not divided into districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
