The Crabbes River is a 53 km long tributary of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence in the extreme southwest of the island of Newfoundland, which belongs to the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .

River course

The Crabbes River rises at an altitude of about 500  m about 30 km north-northwest of the settlement La Poile . There are several smaller lakes in the upper reaches. The Crabbes River initially flows 10 km northwest, then 20 km north. The Crabbes River gradually turns northwest in the lower reaches. The Trans-Canada Highway crosses the river at river kilometer 10 . The Crabbes River eventually reaches the one kilometer long estuary on the coast of St. George's Bay . The catchment area of the Crabbes River is estimated to be 350 km². It is bordered to the north by that of the Middle Barachois River and to the southwest by that of the Highlands River .

Fish fauna

The stock of Atlantic salmon in the Crabbes River system is considered "not endangered" according to NASCO.
