description

The nucleus of Craichlaw House is a tower house from the early 16th century. This was integrated into a manor house completed in 1866. Craichlaw House is isolated off the A75 around two kilometers west of Kirkcowan.

The up to 2.3 m thick masonry of the three-story Tower House is made of quarry stone . The two arched entrance portals of the tower date from the 19th century. However, frames from the original portal were reused on the west portal. The floors above the ground-level vault were also completely rebuilt during this period. Corner tours with slate-covered conical roofs protrude on three edges . On the other hand, a square tower with all-round crenellated reinforcement rises from the southeast corner. The Tower House closes with a slate-covered gable roof with a stepped gable .

The mansion is designed in Victorian style . Its masonry consists of gray quarry stone, which is embossed along the south and west sides . Natural stone surrounds made of polished yellow sandstone are contrasted in color. The complex structure closes with slate roofs. The gables are partly made as a stepped gable. Gable-standing chimneys are partly decorated with cornices .
